TikTok Messaging Ads are lead generation ads that open a chat with your business instead of a website. The chat happens either inside TikTok (Direct Messaging Ads) or in an app like WhatsApp or Messenger (Instant Messaging Ads). They can be a strong fit when customers need an answer before they buy.

Most TikTok ads chase clicks. The trouble is that a click tells you very little. Someone taps your ad, lands on your site, scrolls for twenty seconds, and leaves. You paid for the visit and learned nothing about them.

This guide covers how the format works, which version to pick, how to build the chat, and what to check when you get clicks but no leads.

TikTok Messaging Ads at a glance

Question

Answer

Campaign objective

Lead Generation

Two formats

Direct Messaging Ads and Instant Messaging Ads

Where the chat happens

TikTok DMs, or WhatsApp, Messenger, Zalo, LINE, or a custom URL

Goals you can pick

Clicks, Conversations, and Leads (Leads only in eligible markets)

Availability

Select markets only, according to TikTok

What matters most after launch

Fast replies, and tracking conversations instead of clicks

What Are TikTok Messaging Ads?

Infographic comparing Direct Messaging, where the chat stays in TikTok, with Instant Messaging, where the chat opens in another app.

Compare the two paths:

Normal ad

Messaging Ad

Ad → Landing page → Form → Sales follow-up

Ad → Chat → Qualification → Follow-up → Sale

Customer fills in a form and waits

Customer asks a question and gets an answer

Neither is always better. Messaging helps when the customer has questions before they commit.

Some people search for them as "TikTok messenger ads." TikTok's official name is Messaging Ads.

A quick timeline. The format was already running in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia when TikTok announced its Asia Pacific launch on January 9, 2025. In June 2025, TikTok published a broader introduction, which still says the ads are available in select markets.

TikTok also says 41% of users it surveyed had contacted a business on TikTok. That comes from a September 2023 TikTok survey of 360 users aged 18 and over. Treat it as a small-sample hint, not a market benchmark.

Who Should Use Messaging Ads?

Use them when people need an answer before they can buy. Here's a quick test:

If customers ask...

Messaging Ads can make sense?

"How much is it?"

Yes

"Which one should I choose?"

Yes

"Can you customize it?"

Yes

"Can you deliver to my city?"

Yes

"Can I book a consultation?"

Yes

"I just want to buy this now."

A normal product page may be simpler

TikTok's own examples include commerce, auto, beauty services and professional services. Agency people quoted by Marketing-Interactive say the format suits mid to high involvement purchases. If your product is a cheap, one-tap purchase, a chat adds a step nobody wanted.

Direct vs. Instant Messaging Ads

Direct Messaging Ads

Instant Messaging Ads

Where the chat happens

TikTok DMs

WhatsApp, Messenger, Zalo, LINE, or custom URL

Best for

Teams that already work the TikTok inbox

Teams whose sales already live in one of those apps

Goals available

Leads (eligible markets), Conversations, Clicks

Clicks, Conversations

Messaging partner

Not needed

Recommended. Conversations needs a message event set, which you can set up through Events Manager or a supported partner

Per the Instant Messaging setup guide, Conversations works with Messenger, WhatsApp and Zalo. LINE and custom URLs only support Clicks.

Which one should you pick?

Ignore what your competitors run. Ask one question: where can your team actually reply?

Direct Messaging Ads

Direct Messaging Ads

TikTok's best-practice guide says to start with Direct Messages, because they need no third-party tools. That's sound advice. But the better rule is this: pick the inbox that has an owner. If nobody on your team checks TikTok messages, Direct Messaging Ads will create leads that go cold. A perfect setup is worthless if nobody opens the inbox.

What You Need Before Launching

For Direct Messaging Ads

  • A TikTok Business Account

  • A TikTok Ads Manager account

  • our DM permission set to Everyone. In the TikTok app, go to Profile, Settings, Privacy, then Direct message, and allow messages from everyone. Menu names can change. If you skip this, people can tap your ad and never reach you.

  • Auto lead capture turned on, if you want the Leads goal. TikTok asks you to generate a privacy policy first, and it goes through review.

For Instant Messaging Ads

A working destination: a Messenger Page ID, a WhatsApp Business API number, a Zalo Official Account, or the right link for LINE.

The WhatsApp trap

TikTok requires a unique phone number for the WhatsApp Business API. The number can't already be used by another personal or business WhatsApp account. Some messaging partners also charge extra for the API, and those fees pass through to Meta.

Sort this out before you build the campaign, not after it stalls in review.

How to Set Up TikTok Messaging Ads

Direct Messaging Ads: step by step

  1. Log in to TikTok Ads Manager and click Create ad.

  2. Choose Lead generation as the objective.

  3. Choose Smart+ campaign (TikTok's recommended option) or Manual campaign.

  4. Set the optimization location to TikTok direct messages.

  5. Pick your goal: Leads, Conversations or Clicks.

  6. Set your targeting, budget and bidding.

  7. Link your TikTok Business Account under Identity.

  8. Create or attach a Welcome Message.

  9. Add your video.

  10. In the ad text, make it clear that the button opens a chat.

  11. Click Publish all.

Write the call to action so people know what happens next. "Message us for a quote" beats "Learn more."

Instant Messaging Ads: what changes

  • Choose Instant Messaging apps as the optimization location.

  • Enter your Facebook Page ID, WhatsApp API number or Zalo account. For LINE, use a custom URL.

  • If you pick Conversations, choose the correct message event set.

  • Dayparting is on by default. Set the hours when your team can actually reply.

  • Add a soft call to action in the caption, such as "Message us to get in touch."

Without a messaging partner, people who tap the ad land in your Messenger inbox, and you reply there by hand.

Test it on a real phone

Scan the QR code in the preview and open the chat. Then send a message and confirm a real person on your team receives it. Test on iPhone and Android. TikTok notes the QR preview only works for the operating system you hover over.

Budget, schedule and first-campaign settings

  • Budget: You set it in Ads Manager, like any TikTok campaign. TikTok's help pages don't list a minimum. One mid-2025 video walkthrough reported a $20 daily minimum in the presenter's account. That may have changed, so check your own.

  • Schedule: Match your ad schedule to your reply hours. If nobody works weekends, turn weekends off.

  • Target CPA: Many marketers leave it blank on a first campaign, because TikTok has no data on your account yet. Once you know your cost per lead, you can set a target near it. That's practitioner advice, not TikTok guidance.

  • Special categories: If your ads fall under a special ad category, such as housing, employment or credit, Ads Manager asks you to declare it. Read the descriptions before you launch.

Choose Clicks, Conversations or Leads

Goal

What TikTok tries to get

What it means for you

Clicks

People who tap the chat button

They may open the chat and say nothing

Conversations

People who send a message

Real inquiries

Leads

People who leave contact details

Someone you can follow up with

Pick the goal that matches the action you want. If you want people to start a chat, use Conversations. If you want contact details, use Leads. TikTok's best-practice guide also says that optimizing for Leads or Conversations, instead of Clicks, can give you better performance insights.

Clicks can work for a quick destination test. But a click doesn't tell you whether anyone started a conversation.

Where is the Leads goal available?

TikTok's June 2026 Lead optimization page lists many eligible markets across several regions, including parts of Asia Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and North America. Your TikTok account's registration country, your ad account, and your target countries all need to be eligible. Eligibility can change by market and account, so check the current list before you plan around Leads.

If an older tutorial says Leads is only offered in Southeast Asia, it's out of date.

Where do the leads go?

With auto lead capture on, TikTok watches replies for common contact formats, such as a phone number, an email, or a social handle, and saves them as a lead. TikTok says it doesn't read full conversations. Leads land in TikTok's Leads Center and can sync to a connected CRM. You can also mark a contact as a lead by hand.

One reporting trap. In Ads Manager, "conversions" means leads for a Leads campaign and conversations for a Conversations campaign. Don't treat the two numbers as the same metric.

Build a Chat That Converts

Five-step chat conversion framework showing welcome, questions, qualification, contact collection, and human handoff.

The ad gets people into the chat. The chat has to give them a reason to stay.

Here is where most first campaigns go wrong. The team spends two weeks on the video and two minutes on the first message. It ends up as "Hi! How can we help?"

That puts all the work on the customer. Most people close the chat.

Use five beats: welcome, suggested questions, one or two qualifying questions, contact request, human handoff.

Example

Weak

"How can we help?"

Better

"Hi! Are you looking for pricing, product advice, or delivery info?"

Example: a commercial coffee machine seller

Step

What it says

Ad

"Opening a cafe? Message us for machine recommendations and pricing."

Welcome

"Hi! Is this for a new cafe or an existing one?"

Tap options

"I need a price" / "Which machine fits my shop?" / "How fast can you deliver?"

Qualify

"Roughly how many cups do you serve a day?"

Contact

"We can recommend two options. What email or phone number should we send the quote to?"

Now your rep knows the product need, the size of the business, and the next step. That's a sales conversation, not a click.

What TikTok's tools let you automate

Welcome message template. It has a required greeting (up to 200 characters). You can add up to three suggested questions and an optional form card. Once a person taps one question, the other suggestions disappear. TikTok reviews templates before they go live, so build yours early. There can be a short delay after launch.

Automated chat. A template alone won't answer every question people type. TikTok also offers automated chat, a scripted flow with custom answers and branching. It's the default when you pick the Leads goal. TikTok's August 2026 page says it may not be available to every account yet. If you don't have it, make sure a person can reply.

Tips from TikTok's best-practice guide

  • Use suggested questions. Someone tapping "Book an appointment" is likely more ready than someone reading FAQs.

  • Use a pop-up form to collect contact details mid-chat.

  • Match the welcome message to the ad. If the ad shows a sale, mention the sale.

  • Keep every question short. Only ask what changes your next move.

  • Mark spam and block suspicious users in DMs. TikTok says this helps it find better-quality conversations for you.

Reply Fast

Bright marketing graphic showing a stopwatch, chat bubble, rising engagement line, and a three-minute reply target.

Someone who asks for a price at 10:30 p.m. and hears back at 10 a.m. has often already messaged your competitor.

TikTok reports that messages answered within three minutes see up to 2.2x higher conversation engagement. That's TikTok's internal 2024 data, not an industry benchmark.

Sales research points the same way. In a 2011 Harvard Business Review audit, researchers sent a test lead to 2,241 US companies. Only 37% replied within an hour, and 23% never replied at all. HBR also reported that firms contacting leads within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify them as firms that waited longer. That study covered web leads, not chat ads, so use it as direction, not a TikTok benchmark.

You don't need a big team to be fast. You need an instant, useful first reply, answers to your three most common questions, a clean way to collect contact details, and a named owner for every conversation.

If you can't cover nights and weekends, use dayparting so ads only run when your team is online. Or run a separate after-hours campaign with a greeting that says when you'll reply, suggested FAQs, and a contact form. TikTok recommends this setup.

What Results Has TikTok Reported?

These come from TikTok's January 2025 Asia Pacific announcement and its June 2025 blog. They are self-reported case studies, so read them as proof the format can work, not as benchmarks. The two pages don't always give the same figures for the same case, so the table says which page each number comes from.

What TikTok reported

Clyn Thailand (beauty)

Direct Messaging Ads in March 2024, optimized for Conversations, three creatives (product benefits, testimonials, promotions)

900+ conversations in a week, 22.5% conversion rate, 67% lower cost per conversation vs. a click-based campaign

HydroClean Indonesia (home cleaning)

Instant Messaging Ads aimed at women 25 to 54 in key cities, optimized for Conversations, with TikTok partner Pancake managing messages

74% lower cost per conversation, more qualified leads. The June 2025 blog says the comparison was a previous click-optimized campaign

Phương Đông (Vietnam, beauty clinic)

Direct Messaging Ads with agency partner Funix, aimed at people near the clinics

6.6% conversion rate and about 20% of engaged users visited and paid (both pages). The January announcement adds 60% lower cost per conversation. The June blog adds that 70% of users were responsive

Your results will depend on your market, your offer, and how fast your team replies.

Getting clicks but no messages?

Don't touch targeting first. Find the exact step where people disappear.

What you see

Likely cause

What to try

Many clicks, few messages

Ad promise and welcome message don't match

Use the same offer and wording in both

People open the chat and leave

First message is too generic

Add 2 or 3 tap-to-answer questions

Many chats, few leads

Creative attracts curiosity, not buying intent

Make the offer more specific or tighten the audience

People quit halfway

Too many questions

Cut every question that doesn't affect qualification

Good leads, weak sales

Slow or weak follow-up

Check response time and the offer before blaming targeting

Great days, dead nights

Do You Need a Messaging Partner?

For a small team, TikTok's built-in tools can be enough. A partner tool helps when you have several salespeople, several chat channels, a CRM, or lead routing rules.

TikTok recommends connecting a Messaging Partner before you set up Instant Messaging Ads, because it allows deeper goals and better performance. Pancake, used in the HydroClean case, is one example. Two cautions:

  • Some partners, such as Pancake, may ask you to add money to a wallet before you can reply to customers, according to TikTok's setup page.

  • Check what a tool supports in your region. TikTok Business Messaging isn't available in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK.

If your team manages TikTok, WhatsApp, Instagram, email and other customer conversations in separate inboxes, anomnichannel customer service platform can bring them into one workspace. That becomes useful once the problem is no longer getting messages, but keeping up with them.

Messaging Ads Policies and Good Manners

The ad and the chat have to match. Based on TikTok's Messaging Ads policies (updated July 2025):

  • Same brand, product, offer and price in the ad and the chat.

  • Don't switch the deal. If the ad promises something free, don't ask for payment in chat.

  • Don't ask for sensitive data. That includes date of birth, card or bank details, passwords, medical records, and information about race, religion, sexual orientation, politics or criminal history.

  • Don't use TikTok's branding in coupons or offers without authorization.

Breaking these rules can lead to ad rejection, DM restrictions, or an account ban for severe or repeated cases. Check the current policy page before each launch.

A chat feels more personal than a banner. That's the upside, and also the risk. Industry voices quoted by Marketing-Interactive in January 2025 gave this advice. It's expert opinion, not TikTok policy:

  • Be useful before you sell.

  • Say why you're messaging, and give people a way out.

  • Follow the privacy rules that apply in the markets where you collect leads.

  • Don't over-automate. Poor chatbot flows were named as a big pitfall.

FAQ

What are TikTok Messaging Ads?
Ads that let people start a conversation with your business. The chat stays in TikTok or moves to a supported messaging app.

Are they available everywhere?
No. TikTok says they're available in select markets, and some goals, like Leads, have their own list of eligible markets.

Which is easier to start with, Direct or Instant?
Direct is usually simpler. The chat stays in TikTok and you don't need a messaging partner. The better choice is the inbox your team actually watches.

Can I use my WhatsApp number?
Only if it's a unique WhatsApp Business API number that isn't used on any other WhatsApp account.

Which goal should I choose?
The one that matches the action you want. Conversations for chats, Leads for contact details.

How fast should I reply?
As fast as you can. TikTok's data points to three minutes.

What if my team can't reply at night?
Use dayparting, or run an after-hours campaign with a greeting, FAQs and a contact form.

Can I ask for personal details in the chat?
Only what you need to follow up, like a name, email or phone number. Don't ask for sensitive data such as card details, passwords or date of birth.

Where can I learn more?
TikTok's About Messaging Ads page links to a free TikTok Academy path called "Generate and message leads."

The Bottom Line

Messaging Ads don't just buy clicks. They change what happens after the click. Keep it simple:

  1. Choose the inbox your team actually uses.

  2. Give people a concrete reason to message.

  3. Make the first reply easy.

  4. Respond fast.

  5. Measure leads and sales, not traffic.

And before you copy another brand's setup, open your own Ads Manager. Available destinations, goals and features vary by market and account.

Case study figures and the 2.2x reply-speed figure are published by TikTok and were not independently verified. The advice on tone and privacy reflects expert opinion, not TikTok policy.
